Chapter 1: The History of Fuuinjutsu
Throughout the world of knowledge and shinobi arts, there is none more complex to the mind than the Art of Sealing, known today as Fuuinjutsu. The subtle yet intricate delicacy of Sealing has been studied and pondered for the entire Shinobi World’s existence, and is currently portrayed as a dying art form in the world today. Why is it that such a powerful art and method of protection losing its place in this world today? Does the average shinobi not believe it worth his or her time to interact with such a useful tool of protection and combat? The truth is, not many shinobi today know or even understand the true beauty of the Art of Sealing, the true usefulness of that which I have devoted my life of study too. The dying art receives no credit when talk of a Village’s protection is brought to the dinner table; the complexity is too great for any one shinobi who has not dedicated is life to knowledge to fully comprehend and use. This is the problem, ladies and gentlemen, the realization that we truly know nothing about Fuuinjutsu in its entirety, that we cannot fully comprehend its strength and ability just by merely ‘trying our hardest’. I myself know this better than most, having dedicated my life solely to its ways since I was a young boy, and even now I am still learning its beauty. However, the time has indeed come that I bring forth the era in which the Art of Sealing is once again realized to be superior to its brothers; a way of the shinobi that leaves infinite possibilities to its user. It is here that I will allow you into my world, to come to your own realization that Fuuinjutsu, while complex, is no more than basic fundamentals coming together in harmony to create a beautiful technique.
The Art of Sealing can be traced back to the beginning of the Shinobi World, when it was rumored that a man possessing a strange Kekkei Genkai appeared in the world to become the first shinobi. This creator of Ninjutsu, the Six Realms Sage as he was rumored to be called, brought forth an era of knowledge to the people, and those who sought to benefit from his knowledge, grew in power and prospered into the shinobi of old. Since the dawn of the modern shinobi, the world has made it’s advances in more ways than the Six Realms Sage could have predicted, branching off into five main areas of shinobi arts; Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, Taijutsu, Fuuinjutsu, and Medical Ninjutsu, all of which derived from the Sage’s teachings and creations, all now possessing thousands upon thousands of techniques in each category. Fuuinjutsu wasn’t truly introduced as a component in the modern shinobi world until 30 years after the Six Realm Sage’s appearance in the world. It was in fact Naketo Ekitai, a 45 year old shinobi originating from what is now known as the Fire Country, to create the first methods of Sealing. A true genius of his era, Naketo spent his life as an average Chuunin level shinobi who truly had no other talent in the shinobi arts besides his intellect. The disgrace created by this fact was enough to cause a great rise in devotion to study by Naketo in his later years, and at the age of 45, he stumbled upon what would now be considered as a basic form of Sealing. Naketo Ekitai concluded in his studies that, if certain Kanji symbols were to be written on paper, and applied to an object with a specific amount of chakra embedded into the paper itself, it could in fact be used to stop a person from doing a normal task. His first experiment with this theory succeeded when he was able to successfully seal off his refrigerator, making it unable to be opened after applying the Kanji symbol for ‘Seal’ on the front of it’s door. Naketo would go on to naming this technique ‘Fuuinjutsu’, or ‘The Sealing Art’, named after the symbol used for the experiment.
Only after that experiment succeeded was it concluded that by the specific use of paper, chakra, and specific markings, could Seals be placed on not only house hold items and furniture, but buildings, and other military specified areas. However, to Naketo’s dismay, even after removing the paper from the object, the object would remain sealed shut and unable to be opened. It was then realized that not only could something be effectively ‘sealed’, but would also have to have a counter effect to successfully ‘unseal’ the object in question. Naketo Ekitai unfortunately passed on, merely one year after discovering Fuuinjutsu, as the result of a heart attack at age 46 before completing his methods of counter-sealing. The composition of Counter-Sealing was then left to 34 year old Taka Hitirumi, a student of Naketo’s who had followed his studies and teachings since he was a young boy. Taka, while much more adept to the way of the shinobi than Naketo, had a knack for his teacher’s developed method, and quickly discovered a simplistic method of Counter-Sealing within a year of his sensei’s passing. Taka concluded that while a simplistic paper seal was easy to produce, the composition of it must be precise, and left with a method of removal. This meant that, while creating a paper seal was ‘easy’, creating it to be able to be removed with a Counter-Seal was much more difficult. To effectively create a Counter-Seal for a simplistic paper seal, one would have to mold his chakra differently when embedding it into the paper, leaving a ‘spot’ of vulnerability in the seal itself so that it could be removed. Taka also concluded in this study, that by changing the symbol on the seal, the use and effects of the seal would in fact be changed as well. It was these discoveries that brought forth Fuuinjutsu’s first ‘Era of Creation’, in which tens and hundreds of different Sealing Techniques and Methods were created.
Chapter 2: Formation and Molding of Chakra, Imagery
In every shinobi art, the formation and molding of chakra within the body is extremely important, essentially deciding whether or not a technique will be successful or not before the shinobi has even used the technique. One will find that after studying each shinobi art, that the formation and molding of chakra for each category is essentially different, having their own tricks and patterns to each of them. While Fuuinjutsu is no different in the regard that one must first focus, form, and then successfully mold their chakra in their body before releasing it to use a technique, the steps are completely different from your average Ninjutsu styled technique. It is common shinobi knowledge that all people, including those who are not shinobi, have what is called the ‘Tenketsu’ within their body; this is in essence, the Chakra Circulatory System. The Tenketsu consists of a network of ‘vein-like’ chakra strains that run throughout the entire body, connected at points by 361 individual Tenketsu Points. The Chakra Circulatory System is interwoven into every human being, and is invisible to the human eye, only being known to be able to be seen by Konohagakure’s native Kekkei Genkai, the Byakugan and Sharingan eyes. When a shinobi begins to gather their chakra, and mold it for use in their body, they will normally focus on one part of their body for the chakra to be channeled too. The CCS (Chakra Circulatory System) then responds by sending the focused chakra throughout the body until it reaches the point of focus. When the shinobi does not have a specific task to accomplish, such as walking on water where chakra needs to be focused at the base of the feet, it is common practice for a shinobi to focus their chakra build up into their midriff (stomach) area. This area of the body is best suited to build up chakra, and freely mold it for the use of a technique, and is used to create all types of Ninjutsu.
Fuuinjutsu, however, requires the shinobi to focus and mold their chakra in their hands, and cannot be replaced by focusing chakra into their midriff. Focusing chakra to any other part of the body besides their hands, or otherwise a seal that is already placed on their body, will result in the Fuuinjutsu technique failing to achieve its effect. This would be the equivalent of putting chakra into a plain piece of paper, or expelling plain chakra out of the palm of their hand when being used. Chakra must be gathered, formed and molded within the shinobi’s hands, the palm of the hand being the most used location for Sealing Techniques. It is because of this reason that most shinobi today do not bother with Fuuinjutsu techniques, as the farther away from the midriff the focal point of chakra is, the harder it is to focus on that point; the hands and bottoms of the feet are essentially then, the hardest places to focus chakra too. The formation and molding of chakra is also a difficult process to complete for the inexperience seal user, as it differs greatly from normal Ninjutsu techniques. When using a Ninjutsu technique, the gathering and formation of chakra normally does not matter when using a technique, meaning that one will gather chakra to their midriff in the form of a large mass, until they are ready to use their technique. Fuuinjutsu instead requires the user to form and mold their chakra into a shape that would be visible as a vortex if able to be seen. This vortex is the most basic form of molding chakra when it comes to Sealing, and is used for all basic Fuuinjutsu techniques to date. A good practice of this method is to imagine a swirling galaxy while gathering chakra into the hands, which in turn the brain will naturally begin to help form chakra into the imagined image. Without this type of formation in chakra, or otherwise more advanced formation which will not be discussed in this volume, Fuuinjutsu techniques become ineffective.
One of the last steps in completing the basics of Fuuinjutsu, is the imagery that the user must have in their mind when using a Sealing Technique. When using a Fuuinjutsu, an image must be in the mind of the shinobi using the technique, and the image usually differs between most people. Upon further research, I have discovered that multiple people, all thinking of different images at once, have been able complete the same Sealing Technique with the same effects as one another. This in turn means that while there must be a specific image in the mind of the user, that specific image could be of something different depending on the person. A common image for a seal that closes an area off, for instance, is a door shutting in their mind; while thinking of this door shutting, the user then expels the chakra into the item or seal they are wishing to have the effect, and in turn transfers this effect into the item or seal. When these three concepts are combined to form the basic set up required of Fuuinjutsu, a successful technique is not hard to obtain. Throughout it’s complexities, the Art of Sealing is a mysterious art that when understood correctly, can be used easily and efficiently to do just about anything one could think of. Gather Chakra, Form Chakra, Mold Chakra, Imagine, and Create.
Chapter 3: The Seal
Throughout the thousands of techniques created to date in the category of Fuuinjutsu, all of these techniques require some form of Seal that is placed either on the user of the technique, or on the object that is to be sealed or used for sealing. Items that seals could be and normally are placed on could be paper, wood, stone, structures, doors, and of course the human flesh. When using a Sealing Technique, it is always recommended that experimenting with the types of seals used is done before actually using the technique. Techniques you know have specific seals required for their use are normally fine to use, so long as you follow the instructions of the technique and create the seal that the instructions asks of you; unknown techniques that have multiple seals that can be used, or no known seals at all, are normally avoided by those who aren’t quite sure which specific type of seal to use. This fact is due to the reason that different Seals and Seal Types will change the effect of the technique. Using the wrong Seal when trying to seal off a door from being entered, may in fact cause the door to explode when someone enters it, instead of making it impossible to enter. Always double check your Seal creation work before using a technique, even the slightest variation in design of the Seal can cause unwanted effects, or an unsuccessful technique.
There are two types of Basic Seals when it comes to Fuuinjutsu, Kanji Symbols, and Animalistic Representations. While in composition they are the same, the results of each of these symbols are drastically different when it comes to actually using the technique. Kanji Symbols are the most commonly used form of Seal that is found in modern Sealing Techniques, and is normally recommended for any type of Seal you wish to create. Animalistic Representations are in essence Seals that take on the form of a specific animal, usually used in techniques that have some type of bodily effect upon an opponent or ally. Animalistic Representations are a Seal normally used in Medical type Sealing Techniques, or used to cause harm to another person’s body by an indirect means, but they have also been known to be used as a replacement Seal when trying to conceal a specific technique. An example of this would be carving a Seal of a snake on a rock when blocking off an entrance to a cave, instead of using a Kanji Symbol. This type of Seal allows the shinobi to possibly conceal that a Seal is even on the rock, making it appear as if it is just a carving or drawing instead of an obvious Kanji Symbol Seal. Throughout my research, I have concluded that not only are Kanji Symbols generally give a greater effect and enhance the Sealing Method, but are in fact the best form of Seal for nearly all Fuuinjutsu techniques. While Animalistic Representations still play a part in the Fuuinjutsu of this era, their use is dwindling due to lack of power in the Seal, and lack of time that the Seal actually lasts.
When writing or drawing a specific Seal, there are many different forms of utensils to use, so long as it creates a physical representation of the Seal itself. Pencil, pen, or quill inks are all normally used to create the standard paper Seal with a Kanji Symbol, which is why most practitioners of Fuuinjutsu frequently practice their calligraphy. Chalk is also a standard substitute for the common writing utensils, and can also be used to mark solid objects that do not hold ink well. Seals can also be formed by creating a representation of the Seal with solid objects, being it fallen tree trunks or metal rods on the ground, or any other objects that are all the exact same object arranged in the pattern of the Seal on the ground or other surface. This technique of Seal formation is normally used when setting a trap for an unsuspecting enemy, who is not looking for natural items to be arranged in the form of a Seal; this method is quite efficient and is in my opinion a very good form of surprise attack. The last, but not least, form of Seal creation is the use of one’s own blood to write or draw a Seal. Blood is normally used in Fuuinjutsu techniques that cause bodily harm to an opponent, or have a direct effect on a human body. Blood can be used as a universal form of Seal creation as well, substituting for each and every other method of creating a Seal. After extensive research, I have come to the conclusion that blood is the ONLY universal form of writing material for Seals, in which blood can be used for EVERY Seal ever created to date.
Chapter 4: Conclusion
In conclusion to this volume, the first of my memoirs to be produced to the Shinobi World, The Sealing Arts are a wonderful form of protection, attack, and defense for any shinobi to consider adding to their arsenal. While complex at the core, an understanding of how Fuuinjutsu works can help anyone to better use, and even create their own Sealing Techniques in the future. My only hope is that my research will open the eyes of the Shinobi World to the wonders of this art, and that one day Fuuinjutsu will become a commonly used category of technique by not only shinobi, but common people alike. Until the next volume, I will continue my studies and productions of my findings to better this world, both on the streets, and on the battlefield.
OOC NOTE: This is the first of Soraka's series of books he has written throughout his life. This book was REALLY published in the Shinobi World, and can be referenced too as you see fit while Role-Playing. Not all of these facts are true to the Naruto Manga, and I would say more than half of these facts have been fabricated by myself. With that said, please feel free to comment, criticize, etc. as much as you would like, I welcome it all and love feedback. Enjoy.
